Getaway – Your Place of Rest

Do you long to be secluded on a sandy shoreline?

Imagine warm sand between your toes while waves lap the beach. Heavenly sunshine seeps deep into your shoulders. Healthy food is prepared in a well-stocked refrigerator, teeming with fresh fruit and iced drinks. A stack of books, plenty of pens and journal paper are nearby. And, your camera is at the ready.

A restful getaway. Sound Idyllic?

It does to me. Even for just an hour…especially when life’s tumultuous waves won’t quit.

This quiet place of perfect provision is like what God provides in His presence. A Getaway – your place of rest.

Even for a moment you can experience His perfect calm, your needs met, and bask in His love and care, despite what is happening around you.

Scripture calls it our desired haven:

“They reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end.

Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress.

He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.

Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.”

Psalm 107:27-30 ESV

When life tosses us about like a boat in a storm, we need to know we can cry out to God and He hears us. As the saying goes:

He will either calm the storm or calm His child.

I love that!

The Hebrew words for desired haven give the idea of a city of delight or pleasure—a pleasant harbor.

When I think of a city like this in relation to what God provides, I think of a safe enclosure. Cities in ancient times were walled to protect from marauders and thieves. Inside, the city provided everything needed for life—food, an inner spring for fresh water, and safety for travelers. There was work and care, and healing for the wounded.

These are the images this passage from Psalm 107 evokes for me. Beautiful!

A Getaway – Your Place of Rest.

Jesus tells us, Come to Me and I will give you rest.

When we find our rest in the shadow of His wings, we shut out the clamor. Like an acoustic bubble blocking the noise around us. We discover His perfect place of rest, our desired haven.

No matter how high the waves peak today, He is our haven of rest.

His invitation is like the call of the seaside to me. I long for that getaway place. Do you?

True peace, perfect provision, and quiet rest are found in His presence. No sand required.

  1. Because I live in a desert, lush green trees and flowers always fill my soul with peace and wonder at God’s amazing creation.

I’m currently in Washington D.C. taking care of my daughter after she had surgery. When I look out of her apartment window, I see all the hustle pf a large city. But, nearby, there’s a quiet shady street lined with beautiful trees. I go walking on there every morning and it’s like I’m in my own private sanctuary with God. Starts my day out perfectly!

  2. Hi Jeanne!

You’re talking my language when it comes to get-aways and retreats! The beach doesn’t do it for me, though–but I stop and gasp at landscape images of the English countryside and thatched roof cottages. I don’t expect I will ever get there this side of heaven, but I hope there is something akin to such glorious vistas when we see our Lord. And REST!

  3. Bravo, milady! Soothing words and voice to take in with my morning devotions. Sound quality was fine. There are some little tricks to cleaner consonants, but I didn’t hear anything that would take away from the message or ministry here. Be ye blessed as you continue!
