Many times after a Thanksgiving meal I felt more stuffed than the turkey!
I have vivid recollections of my mother spending countless hours planning the meal, writing out the grocery list, shopping weeks in advance to avoid the crowds. Often it involved several trips to the store to be sure she had everyone’s favorite food item represented at the table.
I loved watching her weave her culinary expertise like a magic wand. Wrestling with a turkey that was difficult for her to handle because of its weight and size. Pre-toasting day old hot dog buns to make her own croutons and adding just the right amount of salt, pepper, sage, onion, celery, sausage and broth to the stuffing mix to create the best dressing ever made.
Peeling and boiling large portions of potatoes, blending in the right amount of butter, milk and seasonings crafting white fluffy, flavorful mounds of mashed potatoes fit to serve a king. Chopping, dicing and mixing all the right ingredients to make a colorful and tasty Cole slaw that became her signature dish.
My favorite and most anticipated addition to the table was her divided crystal sparkling diamond like serving dish filled with homemade dill pickles and spiced apple rings.
The table setting was breath taking and the aroma from the turkey roasted to perfection filled the kitchen! Love was in the air! A meal created by loving hands by a mother who cared deeply for her family and friends.
I have discovered the secret to less stress at Thanksgiving [Tweet This] is to prepare as much of the meal ahead of time.
Thanksgiving is a time to look at your spiritual thermometer. The saying above “you are what you eat” can apply to spiritual truth. Do you plan and prepare for daily servings of bible reading, prayer and asking for wisdom? Do you feast on quality intimate time spent with Jesus brings that brings peace (less stress) to everyday life?
O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man who trusts in him.
