Discovering the Power of Pause with Terry Hershey

Did you know there is power in a pause?

The power of pause….have you ever been listening to a speaker on TV or at an event and they suddenly stop for several seconds. You edge a little closer, leaning in to hear what is coming next.

A pause can be powerful.  [Tweet This]

A good speaker places those pauses at just the right spot so they can make their point stick.

I am reading The Power of Pause by Terry Hershey.

I don’t mean to review this book here, only to share some of the wonderful bits I am discovering. The title caught my attention because of the name of my ministry:

Pausing to See God Clearly

Spending an extra moment in God’s presence. Still. Waiting. Training my ear to hear what He says in prayer or through His Word. There is an anticipation of what He will say next.

I believe God is speaking all the time – we are just too busy to notice.  [Tweet This]

So, a couple of things I found in Terry Hershey’s book today that touched my soul:

“We are wired to be present. We are built to honor the senses. We are created to be attentive, or literally just to be. But somewhere along the way, life chokes the music and poetry out of us.” (page xiii)

“So, enter into this…experience of pausing. Who knows? You might just find a new you–or rediscover the you who has been buried under the clutter and press of the hectic.” (page xvii)

I am already blessed by this book and I haven’t gotten past the introduction. I am expecting good things.

So I am hoping to clear through the clutter and discover more of who God has made me to be. By pausing and taking the time to be. By being present. By taking notice.

And Pausing has many benefits…

Isn’t it amazing that we need to be reminded to “pause.”
Everything in life is meant to move us forward, bridge the gap, keep us in touch, and yet, we are not really in the moment when we do these things. We are on our way somewhere, doing something else, while we check in at the same time.
At this time in my life I have more ……time, pausing is easier when you are alone. I pray for more of it. This book sounds like a very “moving” read !! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As always, they awaken something in me. Love Mom

    1. So true, Mom. And there can be times when your body may be still and your mind isn’t. You can borrow The Power of Pause when I have finished reading it. The biggest thing for me right now is I want to heed His call to slow down–before I find myself forced to 🙂

  2. Pauses can be uncomfortable can’t they? The silence. I want to fill it with sound, movement, my own voice…anything. But pauses, I’m finding, provides sacred space for my soul. Something I desperately need! So I’m with you. Here’s to pausing…and Selah…and giving our souls space to just be. Thank-you for your words, friend!

    1. Rebecca, I love that word, Selah. It sounds like a sigh…like poetry and peace. And I agree pausing is difficult. Silence is deafening. But, Praying that in the midst, His voice will whisper clear, like a bell, calling me to Himself. Thanks for your words today.

  3. I am up for a “Pause Challenge”. I am staying away from Face
Book during lent and have found that to be a good start. Lately I find that even when I do pause my body to sit and spend time with the Lord I have a hard time quieting my mind. I can definitely see where the constant input of the 21st century has made me a more wired person. I used to be able to be still a whole lot easier than i can now.

    1. Jane, I have experienced similar struggles with my mind continuing to race. I am hoping for a taste of the peace He brings to us when He says, Peace, Be Still. Praying for you and with you during this Pause Challenge. Thanks for your comments
