Remarkable Faith: Shauna Letellier {and a Giveaway}

Thanks for joining me today as I share Remarkable Faith: When Jesus Marveled at the Faith of Unremarkable People, by Shauna Letellier – published and released today by Faith Words. Be sure to scroll all the way down and leave a comment for a chance to win a copy (U.S. Residents Only Please).

Do You Have Remarkable Faith?

When I think about that question, I automatically think of all the people who I think have remarkable faith. Like Corrie ten Boom, Billy Graham, Mother Teresa, Elizabeth Eliott and so many more. It is difficult to measure my measly confidence with those who seem to have attained giant-status in that department.

We even call them heroes of the faith. How can I measure up to that?

But Jesus says if I have faith of a mustard seed—the tiniest of seeds, I can move mountains. Belief often looks different than I imagine. It is the smallest glimmer of God in the middle of whatever I am going through.

Seeing Through God’s Eyes

faithShauna Letellier has written a book called, Remarkable Faith, When Jesus Marveled at the Faith of Unremarkable People. She tells the stories of eight unremarkable people, all unnamed in scripture. They struggled with faith that was:

Weak

Helpless

Unworthy

Suffering

Distant

Panicked

Defiant

Flagrant

Shauna not only writes about the scripture account, she creates a story around the characters so you can see what might have happened. Her insights are fresh and intriguing as their stories unfold to bring them to a remarkable faith moment.

The Suffering Faith of the Woman who was Hemorrhaging

This woman lost everything: her place in society, her family, and her money. Her strength was gone, replaced by incredible weakness. Then she heard about a man named, Jesus. Shauna writes:

“(She) suffered because she was following God’s law.”  Page 79

In faith she reached through the crowd to touch the hem of Jesus’ robe and immediately her blood flow stopped.

“Her hands and legs shook, though not with the weakness of lost blood, but with the weakness of worship.” Page 78

This is truly one of my favorite stories and Shauna illuminates it with her wonderful storytelling technique.

And, the story that touched me the most is found in Luke 7: 1-10

The Unworthy Faith of the Roman Centurion

A powerful Roman centurion had a servant who was close to death.  He sent Jewish elders to appeal to Jesus to heal him, but after some thought, sent another word saying he was unworthy for Jesus to come to his home. He believed that Jesus could speak and his servant would be healed. Jesus remarked on his belief.

This account is my favorite of Shauna’s retellings because she so clearly explains the gospel.

The centurion’s faith stands out because so many of us feel unworthy of God’s favor. He had done a good deed by helping the Jews rebuild their synagogue.

But, “we cannot place God in our service by stockpiling good deeds.”  Page 61

“Whether you’ve built a synagogue, an orphanage, or a fine Christian reputation, you cannot earn God’s favor. God’s grace to us is a gift.  Page 60-61

Whether you are well-known or unnamed, God sees your mustard seed faith and calls it remarkable.

Shauna’s insights will enhance your interest in these stories. They may not be remembered by name, but you won’t forget their resolute trust. They will challenge you to look beyond what you can see, or even what is proper or expected, and see the all-powerful Creator, Sustainer, and Everlasting God—and find faith in Him alone.

Jeanne, Isn’t it amazing, that the unnamed in His Word are recognized for their remarkable faith……Shauna
shows us it isn’t our “works”……but our believing trust …….I see this in some of the people I know. After years of illness, surgeries, Chemo, waiting for answers to prayer, and still their believing faith of His healing is unwavering !
I just heard that wherever we go, whatever we do, is worship. How this can impact our everyday with a lifted heart. Thank for for your message, and bringing Shauna’s book to us.
    Love Mom

  2. So many people including myself are wondering if we have enough faith. There’s always the urge to do more for God so He will see us as faithful. We tend to give accolades to the high profile folks with growing ministries and at times use their example as a measuring stick for what we perceive we are lacking. Praise God that we can have an ember of faith smoldering in our souls just like that mustard seed yet God considers us faithful.

  3. “Whether you are well-known or unnamed, God sees your mustard seed faith.” What a wonderful reminder, that God would see me as remarkable when most days I feel worthless and broken.
Somehow, through His Grace and the Double Blessing of my 2 adopted sons – He has let my faith help me rise above a very dark and difficult journey. The joy I find in Christ Alone and my 2 boys, far out way my daily pain. Thank you for the encouragement.
