Whispers of Rest – 40 Days of God’s Love to Revitalize Your Soul, by Bonnie Gray
In our hurry-up world, I need the reminder to pause—to take time to rest so I can hear the whispers of God’s heart. Bonnie Gray’s new book, Whispers of Rest, is a great tool to help me to power down.
Whispers of Rest is a 40-day journey of being still enough to hear God over the wild noise of the world. Each day’s reading is centered on a word; and Bonnie Gray builds a wonderful experience though listening to all that word has to say.
My ears and heart get tired of the competing voices. I get the distinct impression that I am nobody unless I produce more, or bigger and better. From Hollywood standards to social media’s template, I learn pretty quickly that I don’t fit in. I can feel insignificant in the middle of the blaring message of the world. My reaction? To try harder.
Instead, I think God wants me to power down so I can hear His voice of truth
Bonnie Gray writes: “…Jesus wants you to choose what is better – to lay down what everyone else expects of you and free your heart to be His.” Whispers of Rest, Page 36
I need reminders from the word of God about who I am relative to who God is. Bonnie’s book takes me on a journey from Being the Beloved to Shining as the Beloved, with words like: Delight, Small, Stay, Play, and Listen. A journey to know I am His BELOVED.
“It’s hard to remember our name when critical voices confuse us…studies show people get depressed from merely viewing updates on social media. Pulses quicken. Blood pressures rise. Our brains are wired to compare disparate objects. So we end up objectifying what we have or what we do—rather than who we are…the world labels us, but God knows our true name.” ~ Whispers of Rest, page 42
God says: But you will be named my Delight, for the Lord delights in you. Isaiah 62:4
As this truth sinks down in my soul, I realize I long for someone to delight in me – to REALLY delight in who I am as a person, inside. When the messages of the world layer this so deep in lies, I wonder if I am any good at all. Knowing that God delights in me, not for what I do, or accomplish, or look like…but for who I am…Oh how I need this.
But I wonder what delight might feel like. How do I explain it?
Then I thought about my 3-year-old grandson and how I delight in him. Every photo brings joy. Every milestone thrills my heart. There is nothing complicated about my love for him—it is just there all the time.
Could this be a glimpse of how God delights in His kids?
