I have invited Cathy Baker to share about her new book today. When I saw the title: Pauses for the Vacationing Soul, I knew I needed to share this beach devotional with you. You know I am all about pausing. And what better place than the beach to get a fresh view of our Heavenly Papa!

Pauses for the Vacationing Soul
By Cathy Baker
Have you ever gone on vacation only to realize that you left God at home? Practically speaking, that is. We know the Spirit of the Living God resides within us, but when we go on vacation routines shift, and oftentimes extended family joins us—especially on beach vacations.
Too often I’ve settled for reading a Bible verse or even a chapter only to realize that, while I love God’s Word, in that moment I was simply checking off a box in my brain to alleviate the guilt of not spending time with Him on my vacation. Some people have figured out how to do it all, but not me. This struggle emerged as a prayer every year at the beach, and then, three years ago, the prayer emerged as a book idea.
While sitting on the beach one morning, before the family made their way down, an idea for a beach devotional rushed my mind as quickly as the waves covered my feet. The following summer, the same idea returned just as quickly, but this time with more details. Sensory-based elements I’d added to dozens of adult Bible studies I’d taught for the past twenty years flooded my mind.
Soon after returning home that year, I crossed paths with a woman who attended one of my studies over a decade ago. She shared how she still had her little bag of sand from the study tucked away in her bedside table and how it reminds her every day of how much God loves her. In that moment, I knew He wanted me to move from praying about the project to doing it.
My Sensory-based Beach Devotional is Finished
This week that struggle-turned-prayer-turned-idea came to fruition in the form of a sensory-based devotional for the beach. Pauses for the Vacationing Soul is a one-week guide that includes arrival and departure days. Each day the reader focuses on a different sensory and applicable Bible account. Other vacation and holiday devotionals will soon be added to the collection.
May this little book give those of us who don’t have vacationing with God all figured out a way to pause during the busyness of the beach and spend a brief but meaningful moment with the Lord.
